Mutuality Preservation for Ubiquitous Resource Access

Complex networked systems provide access to a variety of resources. There are standard resources as well as nomadic ones. Local access suffices for some whereas others are far off requiring distant access. Of each resource type multiple instances are accessible greatly differing in characteristics. A scalability measure is used to evaluate the extent to which the system manages to effectively utilize the aggregate processing power available and hide such characteristics. Scalability is measured as a continuous number in the range 0..1. Mutuality Preservation is proposed presenting a flexible abstraction of mutual interest. It also provides a simple yet powerful paradigm for organizing gigantic networked systems spanning grand geographical distances (e.g. Internet). Similar and repeated resource access requests are made efficient by having local information available. Mutuality Preservation is basically used to hide scale. It is subsequently extended to also hide faults, mobility, proximity, latencies and resource capacity constraints. Mutuality allows coping with dynamic and drastic changes to system configuration. Such changes characterize mobile systems. This paradigm is used to propose ubiquitous resource access with a scalability measure approaching the upper limit of the range. This is demonstrated via simulation and prototype implementation.
